Zadar Croatia – visitor information

This pearl of Croatian tourism has, in recent years, become one of the favourite destinations for tourists from all over the world. With the population of 92 0000, Zadar is an administrative, political and cultural centre of north Dalmatia. The introduction of low budget airlines, with flights that connect Zadar with many European destinations, has contributed to its popularity. Further information is available on Zadar airport web pages.
What makes Zadar quite astonishing is its unique combination of cultural heritage, entertainment and its magnificent sea. Many monuments stand as witnesses of its 3000 year long and turbulent history during which the city was under Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, Austrian and French dominion. Nearly all of the monuments, landmarks and churches are situated on the Zadar peninsula which is the historical core of the city.
When in Zadar make sure to see the St. Donatus church (Crkva Sv. Donata), from the 9th century which is situated next to the old forum descending from the Roman Empire, as well as churches of St. Stosija and St. Krsevan (link) both exquisite samples of Romanic architecture. Apart from the mentioned, the Five wells Square (Trg pet bunara) across which the people of Zadar dragged drinking water in the time of Turkish threath is also a landmark worth seeing along with the cities Arsenal - the military fleet storage room built in the 18th century in time of Venetian dominion. If you are an arts lover be sure to visit the National museum (Narodni muzej), the Archaeological museum (Arheološki muzej), The City lodge (Gradska loža) situated on the public square, the Museum of ancient glass (Muzej antičkog stakla) which holds a glass and glass jewellery workshop, the Gold and silver exhibit in the Benedictine monastery of St. Mary (Zlato i srebro Zadra). Also be sure to enjoy a stroll down Kalelarga, the main city street, or take a rest on the Public Square which is where the first café bar in the city was opened.
The Sea organ and Greeting to the sun are two urban installations that became the symbol of the city and are situated at the sole top of the peninsula. Both installations try to express the communication with nature; Sea organs are submerged in the sea and make sounds under the influence of its movement, and Greeting to the sun installation changes colours and makes a breathtaking light show during sunset. You should allow yourself to be taken to the other side of the Zadar coast by one of the barkajolas, sailors on little boats that transport citizens from one side of the city harbour to the other and have been doing so for 6 centuries.

Swimming lovers will surely enjoy the city beach Kolovare, and just a few kilometres from the city core are the tourist villages Borik and Diklo with its sandy and gravely beaches and a variety of sport and wellness contents. Accommodation is available there in the form of hotels and private rooms and apartments. Regarding the public transportation there is a bus line that connects these villages with the centre, with ride frequency of 10 minutes.
A variety of exhibits is available for viewing in Zadar or if you wish you can see one of the concerts of traditional Dalmatian song performed by klapas. If you are a lover of serious music it is worth mentioning the traditional manifestation – Music nights in St. Donatus (Glazbene večeri u Sv. Donatu) that take place from the beginning of July until mid August. For those who crave the night life we recommend lounge bars and clubs : Ledana, Arsenal, The Garden, Maraschino bar and Hitch bar along with other smaller café bars scattered in the narrow streets of town centre.
While in Zadar be sure to taste the specialities of Dalmatian cuisine and you can do so in many taverns and restaurants. We can recommend tavern Stomorica, restaurants Malo misto, Lungo mare and famous fish restaurants Foša and Niko. Enjoy fish specialities, traditional Dalmatian pašticada and lamb as well as homemade prosciutto and cheese. In the centre you will be able to find a variety of stores and souvenir shops in which you can buy something to remember your visit by. If you want to get a traditional souvenir allow us to suggest a bottle of maraschino, famous sweet liquor made only in Zadar from a maraska cherry, or perhaps chocolate pralines with the same maraska cherry filling, or a glass replica of St. Donatus church, glass jewellery or one of the antique glass replicas made in the Museum of ancient glass.
